The Isole Eolie, also commonly referred to as the Aeolian Islands, is located off the coast of Sicily and is made up of a group of 7 islands namely; Stromboli, Lipari, Alicuda, Panarea, Filicudi, Salina and Vulcano.

The total surface area of the islands is a 1216 square kilometers. Individually, the islands vary in size. Note that the islands are all from volcanic activity and are separated by 200 meters deep Sicilian Coast waters. An amazing feature of the islands is that they have provided to types of eruptions namely – Vulcanian and Strombolian. The site’s importance to the geologists and the volcanology in general prompted its listing in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 2000.

Vegetation

The vegetation found here is typically Mediterranean. The islands are home to a total of 900 plant species, 4 of which are endemic. The islands are characterized by man-modified landscape such as abandoned olives and vines. The steppe vegetation is also very common.

Fauna

Interestingly, the faunal distribution of the continental Europe reaches the archipelago’s southern limits. About 40 bird species have been recorded to live in this eco-region. About 10 species of this have been listed by the Sicilian authorities as endangered. A good number of migrant birds can also be found within the park. The archipelago has therefore been listed as an Important Bird Area by Birdlife International.

Among the mammal species that you are going to encounter here include 7 species of bats. 7 Species of reptiles and some 15 endemic invertebrate fauna can also be sighted in the park.

Archaeological Evidence

Different layers of archaeological excavations have revealed life in the islands since the Neolithic Age. The all-important Mediterranean Basin history is well preserved in these islands.
