This important Buddhist temple was built in using the Javanese Buddhist architecture. It combines the Buddhist concept of attaining Nirvana and the ancient Indonesians’ practice of worshipping the ancestors.

The temple is a masterpiece of art. It features decorations such as 2672 reliefs and 504 statues of Buddha. It is made with 6 stacked platforms, six of which are square and 3 are circular. At the center there is a central dome which is encircled by 72 statues of Buddha.

The fact that it is the largest Buddhist Temple in the world makes it one of the most important Buddhist monuments in the world. It also happens to be one of the shrines that Buddhists pay pilgrimage to. The pilgrimage follows a laid out procedure as follows. Pilgrims will start their journey at the base of the temple and follow the three levels of Buddhist cosmology namely;

  • Kāmadhātu (the world of desire)
  • Rupadhatu (the world of forms) and
  • Arupadhatu (the world of formlessness
